On Monday in Sydney, the US beat South Korea by 145-69 and broke the Women’s Basketball World Cup record of 143 points set by Brazil in 1990.
In winning against South Korea and setting a new Women’s Basketball World Cup record, Brionna Jones scored 24 points, A’ja Wilson scored 20 points, and Shakira Austin made a layup with nine seconds left.
Wilson said I don’t think I’ve ever been part of a team that can score the basketball like this, and this is crazy that we put up 145 points. I think when you look at us and know how talented we are, we just came together, and we play together very well, she said.
The USA has the most talented roster of any team in the World Cup, with 12 WNBA stars on the roster, but they had never come close to that point during their storied World Cup history.
The previous record of the US in the World Cup was 119 points against China in 2006 and Angola in 2014, and the scoring margin was also the biggest as they won by 75 points against Angola.
The US won 26 games in a row from 1994 to 2006, and now again, after the 2006 semi-final, this win is their 26th win in a row in World Cup play for the US. The World Cup record of straight wins is held by the Soviet Union, who won 56 matches in a row from 1959-1986.
The US also broke some other records, such as 62 field goals made, 36 assists, and 94 points in the paint.
Cheryl Reeve, the US coach, said Our size was a problem for them, and I thought we shared the ball.
South Korea can still place in the quarter-final with a win over Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
